It is very common to have just one job, especially job at company, and working so hard until late at night. I don't know much about other working culture except that in Japan. But working culture in so called developing country is very eye-opening and there are many things we (at least Japanese) can learn from developing world.
It's a mixture of different job and diversification of sources of income.
It was when I was in Zambia more than 10 years ago, development consultant and government civil servant who worked with me on particular project told me interesting story. One said I have a nice chicken. The other said I have very good organic honey. According to them, they had been running second business to increase their income.
In this 21 century, life isn't so easy as even big companies collapse easily and economic boom will turn around in much shorter span of life. Your salary may not rise as you expected but cost of living is rising everywhere.
What can we do?
The answer I have learnt from my friends in Africa was to diversify source of income. It has another positive aspect in our lives. We can make our hobbies and interesting personal work as a source of income. I hope this blog post is also one of my diversified source of income, at least a few hundred dollars in a few years.
What I am also dreaming is that investing developing world, such as Africa, to provide ethical social business to make things better for ordinary people. I have some rough ideas and still working hard to generate necessary seed money to invest in it in near future.
